Facebook: How to keep your phone number private

Posted on October 13, 2012 by Source: timesofindia.indiatimes.com

If you are worried that people can easily access your Facebook profile by searching for your phone number, there are two steps you can take to prevent this.

Facebook: How to keep your phone number private
A user firstly needs go to the about section in his/her profile, then click on the button next to mobile phones and other phones and make sure that they are not set to “everyone,” according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.

Then the user can change the setting to “friends,” “friends except acquaintances” or, the most restrictive, “only me.”

The user then needs to go to the privacy settings, and click on ‘how you connect.’

Then under “who can look you up using the email address or phone number you provided,” select “friends” or “friends of friends,” the report said.

But the most easy and simple way to shield your phone number from Facebook, is to remove it from the social networking site, it added.

According to the report, Facebook has restricted phone number searches on its mobile site after a security researcher was able to find Facebook users by searching random phone numbers.

Facebook has also said that being able to look someone up by searching for their phone number on the site is a feature, not a bug.

Windows 8 likely to give a lifeline to PCs

Posted on October 12, 2012 by Source: timesofindia.indiatimes.com

The PC is not dead, but it’s no longer king of the technology universe.

As Microsoft prepares to launch Windows 8, the newest version of its operating system, the tech landscape is dramatically different from three years ago, when Windows 7 was launched.

Windows 8 likely to give a lifeline to PCs

The market for mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones is red-hot, leaving the personal computer as an afterthought for many. Microsoft, which was the biggest tech firm in 2009, has fallen behind Apple and Google in market value.

One-time giants like Hewlett-Packard and Dell are struggling amid sluggish demand as sales of tablet computers and other devices surge.

A report by research firm IDC projected global PC sales this year of 367 million, up just a fraction of a percent from 2011 and marking the second consecutive year of growth below two percent.

ABI Research predicts tablet computers will overtake notebook PCs by 2016 as consumers shift to newer devices like the Apple iPad.

PCs are not heading for the graveyard yet, and will likely get a lift from Windows 8. But the PC appears has taken a back seat to hotter mobile devices.

Rob Enderle, analyst and consultant with Enderle Group, said that talk of the “post-PC era” is premature.

“A lot of us are looking at this as a PC-plus world,” he told AFP.

“People are retaining their PCs, but not cycling them as fast. They are supplementing them with tablets. People can’t afford to buy both new devices and a lot of people are locked into a cycle on their smartphone.”

Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies Associates said that the PC “still is pretty relevant” but “not the center of the computing universe.”

“I think people are going to choose a pantheon of devices, and all of these are connected through the cloud… so the user is now the centre of the tech universe.”

A Pew Internet study showed in September that 85 percent of American adults have a cell phone, 45 percent have a smartphone and 18 percent have a tablet computer.

Pew found 31 percent of those with internet-ready phones mostly go online using their cell phone, and not using some other device such as a desktop or laptop computer.

IHS iSuppli said that for the first time since the 1980s, PCs account for less than half the semiconductor chips known as DRAMs. This highlights the illustrates the diminishing domination of PCs in the electronics supply chain.

Clifford Leimbach at IHS said the trend means “PCs are no longer generating the kind of growth and overwhelming market size that can single-handedly drive demand, pricing and technology trends in some of the major technology businesses.”

Yet the PC is likely to get a lift with the October 26 release of Windows 8 and a variety of new PCs designed to take advantage of the new system,

Analysts at Gartner say Microsoft is adding some excitement by releasing its own Surface tablet with the new Windows system.

“Windows 8 is not your normal low or even high impact major release of the OS,” said Steve Kleynhans, research vice president at Gartner.

“It’s the start of a new era for Microsoft.”

The new versions of Windows and Internet Explorer set for release have been designed with an emphasis on touch-screen controls to adapt them to new mobile devices.

And Microsoft will have the ability to leverage its productivity tools like Office and Word to keep people in the Microsoft “ecosystem” via cloud computing.

Gartner analysts say that if Windows 8 on tablets is successful, it can regain some traction in the workplace and grab some momentum from Apple and Google-based Android devices.

Microsoft releases new Office to manufacturers

Posted on October 12, 2012 by Source: news.cnet.com

The next version of Microsoft Office client, servers, and services will be rolling out to select customers before the end of the year.

Microsoft releases new Office to manufacturers

Microsoft officials are finally going public with the planned timeline for Office Next/Office 2013.

First up is release to manufacturing (RTM). Believe it or not, the next version of Office has RTM’d today, October 11 — a month earlier than my sources and many Microsoft customers, partners, and pundits were predicting.

(A quick aside: The naming of the clients, servers, and services known by codename Office 15 is fairly confusing. Products with “2013″ in the name — like Office 2013 or Exchange Server 2013 — seem to be the on-premises/locally installed versions. “Office Next” seems to be the way Microsoft is referring to versions of Office sold on a subscription basis, as well as cloud versions of its Office wares, such as the next version of Exchange Online.)

In an Office blog post today, Microsoft executives noted what they’ve been trickling out recently: the set of client apps, servers, and services in the “Office 15″ wave will be released in several stages.

Volume licensees will be able to get their hands on the RTM bits as of mid-November 2012. (TechNet and MSDN subscribers will get the same access). Office 365 subscribers also will get all the new hosted-server bits starting in mid-November.

In the first quarter of 2013, the new Office releases will be generally/commercially available to consumers. In other words, that’s when the new subscription-based versions of Office — branded as Office 365 — will be available for purchase.

Microsoft released the one and only public beta of the new Office client, server, and services wares, known as the Customer Preview, in July of this year.

Google launches free SMS service for Gmail in India

Posted on October 11, 2012 by Source: timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Search giant Google has started rolling out free SMS for its free email service Gmail and paid email service Google Apps customers in India. The service allows users to send SMSes to mobile phones from chat windows. Users have to add mobile numbers of their contacts in the email address book and they are set.

Google launches free SMS service for Gmail in India

The service starts with 50 SMS credits for each user, every sent SMS costing one credit. Every reply received adds on 5 credits subject to the maximum level being 50 SMS at any given time. There is no official statement from Google on the launch of this service, however the service has gone live this evening in the chat windows of many users.

Google is rolling out the service in partnership with cellular operators, which means they would share revenue with Google out of SMSes users on their network send. It specifies a way to buy more SMS credits.

“You can always send an SMS to your own phone, and then reply to that message multiple times. Every time you send a reply message, your SMS credit is increased by five. Effectively, you’re buying more messages by paying your phone company for these outgoing messages,” it writes on its chat help portal.

The service currently supports eight cellular operators including Aircel, Idea, Loop Mobile, MTS, Reliance, Tata DoCoMo, Tata Indicom and some circles of Vodafone. BSNL, MTNL and Airtel are not supported yet.

Got privacy? Advertisers to ignore ‘do-not-track’ settings online

Posted on October 11, 2012 by Source: foxnews.com

Three major advertising groups have announced plans to battle, protest or outright ignore “do-not-track” settings designed to protect your privacy online.

Got privacy? Advertisers to ignore 'do-not-track' settings online

The do-not-track feature is meant to regulate the vast network of marketers and advertisers that have built a multi-billion dollar industry around gathering phone numbers, email addresses and other personal data online. It is built into the newest browser from every major maker, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome.

But Microsoft’s consumer-friendly decision to enable the feature by default in IE 10 has lit up a debate on the topic — and earned the ire of the advertising industry.

On Tuesday the Digital Advertising Alliance, which claims to represent more than 5,000 companies, announced plans to simply ignore the privacy flag in Internet Explorer.

“The DAA does not require companies to honor DNT signals fixed by the browser manufacturers and set by them in browsers,” the group said in a statement. “A ‘default on’ do-not-track mechanism offers consumers and businesses inconsistencies and confusion instead of comfort and security.”

Some privacy experts were quick to raise the red flag.

“The Digital Ad Alliance is trying to kill off do not track,” noted Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, a privacy watchdog. “Its announcement today to punish Microsoft for putting consumers first is an extreme measure designed to strong-arm companies that care about privacy.”

Consumers want and expect strong privacy protections, said Brendon Lynch, Microsoft’s chief privacy officer, in a statement emailed to FoxNews.com. The company has no plans to back down, in other words.

“A recent Microsoft survey of U.S. and European consumers shows 75 percent of PC users want Microsoft to turn on do not track. This reaffirms our decision to enable DNT in the ‘Express Settings’ portion of the Windows 8 set-up experience,” he said.

“Transparency and choice guide our approach.”

But other advertising groups joined the rising chorus; the Interactive Advertising Bureau said it fully supported the DAA’s position. And an open letter from the Association of National Advertisers to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer last week said the company’s move would “undermine American innovation and leadership.”

“In May of this year, Microsoft announced that it was building do not track by default into its upcoming Internet browser … this action was shocking to ANA’s membership,” the letter stated.

“Microsoft’s announcement has been uniformly met with outrage, opposition, and declarations that Microsoft’s action is wrong. The entire media ecosystem has condemned this action,” the ANA board of directors wrote.

While advertisers and marketers are incensed, consumers certainly want to restrict the information being gathered. A recent Berkeley survey noted that the majority of Americans don’t want to be tracked online, Forbes pointed out.

Skype targeted by ‘worm’ malware infecting Windows PCs

Posted on October 10, 2012 by Source: www.bbc.com

Skype, the internet communications platform, is being used by hackers to distribute a “worm” that infects Windows PCs.
Skype targeted by 'worm' malware infecting Windows PCs
When users click on an instant message saying “lol is this your new profile pic?” they unwittingly download a file containing a Trojan horse malware file.

This opens a backdoor allowing hackers to hijack infected PCs and recruit them into a “botnet army”.

Users can be locked out of their machines and held to ransom.

According to internet security specialist Sophos, the worm is a variant of the well-known “Dorkbot” worm which has been spread by social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

When the worm infects a computer it sends out the “lol” message to the user’s contact list.

Unsuspecting recipients think the message has originated from someone they know and click on the link, thereby downloading the malware payload.
Hijacked computers

Skype said in a statement: “Skype takes the user experience very seriously, particularly when it comes to security. We are aware of this malicious activity and are working quickly to mitigate its impact.

“We strongly recommend upgrading to the newest Skype version and applying updated security features on your computer.

“Additionally, following links – even when from your contacts – that look strange or are unexpected is not advisable.”

Botnets are often used to mount distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks – forcing websites offline – to run spyware or to send out spam emails.
