Delhi Metro to soon launch official mobile app

Posted on March 18, 2013 by Source: timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Reaching out to commuters who use smartphones, Delhi Metro will soon launch a mobile application which will provide information regarding fares and stations including new ones coming up in Phase III.

Delhi Metro to soon launch official mobile app

The application is expected to work offline without internet/GPRS (one time download) which means that users will incur no running cost on it. Users will also be able to download latest version of application.

DMRC has floated a tender for developing the application, for which final date of submission is March 28.

Some facilities that the application will provide include information about nearest metro station, fare between stations, timings of last and first train at various stations, travel time, route information, metro map and parking availability on the station premises, an official said.

The commuters can also find landmarks and tourist spots near metro stations, get information about feeder services and helpline numbers. The application will also give commuters information about the new stations coming up in Phase III.

Based on the phone’s operating system and services, the application would also be able to determine the user’s current location by using GPS and direct the route to the destination.

A graphical representation of the Metro Map will enable the user to pan in, zoom in and out, and display user’s current location on metro route map, the official said.

Details of feeder buses available at different stations with their routes, DTC buses in route of metro station will also be available on the application.

The application will provide details of Metro Museum, such as how to reach the museum, timing, holidays, souvenir and their price, and whom to contact for assistance.

Firefox makes a Metro move

Posted on October 6, 2012 by Source: news.cnet.com

The first release of a Windows 8-optimized Firefox arrives, but it’s a rough alpha that Mozilla confirms won’t be ready anytime soon.
Firefox makes a Metro move
With only a few weeks to go before Microsoft’s big Windows overhaul, Mozilla puts forward its first version of Firefox preview optimized for Windows 8′s touch interface.

How to install it
Once you download and run the Firefox Metro Preview (download installer) in Windows 8, you must close Firefox in Metro and Desktop if you already have them installed, then open the Control Panel and set Internet Explorer as the default browser.

From there, run in Desktop mode the Firefox Nightly EXE that you just downloaded and set it as the Default when prompted. A Windows 8 prompt will open, choose Nightly as the default, and then in Firefox, go to Options/Advanced/General and set it as the default browser there, too.

What works and what doesn’t — so far
The Metro Preview version of Firefox is being worked on in an experimental branch of the Firefox Nightly builds called Elm. Erica Jostedt, Mozilla’s Senior Manager of Product Communications, confirmed that it doesn’t have a ship date yet. “We don’t have the set timeline yet — it’s a preview right now that’s updated nightly, but on the Elm branch. When it lands on mozilla-central, it’s officially on the trains,” she wrote in an e-mail to CNET.

“Elm is the experimental repository where most of our Metro development work has been happening. This repository produces nightly builds, much like the Firefox Nightly channel,” wrote Asa Dotzler, Firefox’s product manager. Those builds will update automatically every day, but they’re not part of the regular Firefox release schedule.

The Firefox Metro Preview build has a lot of standard Firefox features working, as well as some Metro optimizations. It has an option for always showing tabs, as well as a more Internet Explorer 10-style tab preview that hides from view after a few seconds. It also offers an IE10-inspired way to pin tabs as tiles to your Start screen, and a different take on present Bookmarks, History, and Downloads that looks like the bird’s eye view of horizontal tiles used in Semantic Zoom.

It has more features optimized for Windows 8 than Google Chrome does. Chrome’s Metro support landed a few months ago, but hasn’t seen much public development since then and basically resembles the Desktop mode version. The Firefox Metro Preview also showcases the Australis interface, which remakes Firefox visually to look much more like its Android counterpart.

Firefox Sync was partially working in the Metro preview. History data appeared to synchronize, for example, but Bookmarks didn’t — at least not after 30 minutes. A reboot was required to get the History to appear, too.

However, it’s too buggy for regular use. The touch screen support was uneven, at times sluggish. Some sites loaded slowly, and sites with even moderate Flash implementation were basically unusable. If you’re on Windows 8 and want a more stable experience, you can sacrifice the Metro features and run the current stable build.

While it’s good to see the three major browsers all on board the new version of Windows, the slow start for Firefox and Chrome raises the question of how much ground they’re willing to cede to Internet Explorer 10. A Metro-optimized browser could be essential for success in a post-Windows 8 world, but that’s entirely dependent on the public reaction to Windows 8. We’ll begin to see that when the operating system reaches the public in just a few short weeks, on October 26.

Is Windows 8 on Intel coming sooner rather than later?

Posted on January 23, 2012 by Source: news.cnet.com

Is Windows 8 on Intel coming sooner rather than later?Listening to Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini over the last couple of months, one can’t help but wonder whether Windows 8 isn’t coming sooner rather than later.

Sooner as in not next year (as in October?) Next year being a scenario pitched by some analysts.

And I do mean Windows 8 on the tried and true Intel and Advanced Micro Devices X86 platform–not ARM necessarily–as that’s all Otellini cares about.

Otellini’s chipperness started back in November when he made a very upbeat presentation about how Windows 8 will transform laptops into tablets–or what is now being referred to as ultrabook convertibles.

He maintained this enthusiasm on Thursday when he blurted out, in response to an analyst’s query, that Windows 8 tablets are “being queued up” for production.

Let’s be clear: Otellini isn’t some analyst trying to read tea leaves. He’s the hardware half of Wintel and might just know a little something about the real status of Windows 8.

Microsoft’s Xbox.com site to get more social

Posted on November 9, 2011 by Source: news.cnet.com

Microsoft is planning a major revamp of its Xbox.com gaming site this week to enhance its social networking features and give certain areas a new Metro-based paint job, as detailed in a new Xbox blog.

The company is replacing the current “My Xbox” section on the site with a new area simply called “Social.” The new Social section will let gamers see what their friends are doing and tap into a new Beacons feature that will be available in the next update to the Xbox 360 dashboard. Beacons will allow users to mark the games they’d like to play with others, either right away or at a specific time.

Microsoft's Xbox.com revamp will let gamers tag the games they want to play with others

The new Social page will also sport a different look and feel, courtesy of Microsoft’s Metro interface. The top of the page will display a group of Metro-based tiles with links to Xbox Live events, details about new games in the marketplace, and a look at new titles coming out. On the left will be other links that show you how many of your friends are online and how many messages are waiting for you.

Under your Avatar will be links where you can check your account and download queue, edit your profile, and redeem codes for the Xbox marketplace. A Friends Activity section shows you which games your friends are playing, who’s playing them now, and who’s played them recently. You’ll also be able to see the games and other apps that you’ve recently loaded and how many of your friends are playing them.

Windows 8 plans to better manage your battery life

Posted on November 9, 2011 by Source: news.cnet.com

Designing Windows 8 for virtually any device from smartphone to PC, Microsoft says it’s had a key goal in mind for all hardware platforms–energy efficiency.

With laptops and mobile devices slurping up battery power and desktops and servers chewing up electricity, Microsoft has wanted to ensure that any device running Windows 8 can tap into better power management.

“Very small changes done well in Windows can result in very large positive environmental impact because of our scale,” Pat Stemen, a program manager on Microsoft’s Kernel team, said in the latest Building Windows 8 blog. “In many markets around the world, increasing electricity consumption is putting more demand on every aspect of the workplace to reduce power consumption. PCs are a significant source of potential savings.”

Software itself can impact power usage, noted Stemen, since the CPU, hard disk, memory, and other components each consume resources. The operating system and drivers also play a role since they manage the hardware.

With energy savings in mind, Stemen says that Windows 8 was designed with three goals:

Aim for power efficiency on all types of hardware – Whether someone is using a Windows tablet or a powerful gaming machine, the idea was to standarize on the same power management features to be consistent across all platforms.

Provide great battery life – Windows 7 offered a large reduction in energy use, particularly in the battery life of mobile PCs, said Stemen, and the goal with Windows 8 was simply to maintain that same level amidst all the other feature changes.

Microsoft explains reason for Windows 8 Start menu

Microsoft explains reason for Windows 8 Start menu

Windows 8′s new Metro-based Start menu has already aroused concerns and questions among users, but Microsoft sees the feature as a natural evolution.

In the latest Building Windows 8 blog, Chaitanya Sareen, program manager lead on Microsoft’s Core Experience Evolved team, acknowledged some of the questions about the new Start menu from worrisome users.

“With regard to the main user experience, particularly Start, we’re noticing some themes in your comments,” Sareen said.

“Will there be a way to close Metro-style apps without going to Task Manager? (Yes there will be, but we also want to talk about why you probably won’t need to use it.) Are we going to do anything to make the mouse more efficient in scrolling through your programs in Start? (Yes, we’ll improve that experience and show you much more in the beta.) Some of you have talked about it feeling less efficient to cycle through your recent programs compared to using the Taskbar (and we’ll have more to say about that in future posts).”
