Apple’s Tim Cook becomes highest-paid CEO

Apple Inc’s Tim Cook was the highest-paid chief executive officer in the US last year as compensation gained 2 per cent overall from 2010, the New York Times reported.

tim-cookCook received about $378 million, which includes salary, perks and bonuses ($1.8 million) and a one-time stock award ($376.2 million), that extends over 10 years. One-half of the award vests in 2016 and the other in 2021, the newspaper said.

Larry Ellison of Oracle Corp was second with $77.6 million, followed by J C Penney Co. (JCP)’s Ronald Johnson, at $53.3 million, the Times said. The median total compensation for US CEOs rose to $14.4 million, the newspaper said, citing the survey by executive compensation tracker Equilar.

Viacom Inc’s Philippe Dauman, who was No. 1 in the survey last year, was fourth this year with $43.1 million, followed by Honeywell International Inc’s David Cote, who received $35.3 million, the Times said. Stephen Chazen of Occidental Petroleum Corp was paid $31.7 million and was sixth, the newspaper said.

Seventh through 10th, respectively, were Robert Iger, Walt Disney Co, $31.4 million; Clarence Cazalot Jr, Marathon Oil Corp, $29.9 million; Alan Mulally, Ford Motor Co, $29.5 million; and Rupert Murdoch, News Corp, $29.4 million.

Codename ORBIS? Sony PlayStation 4 gets a working title and other rumorsThis is the code name reportedly being given to the fourth incarnation of the PlayStation console (PS4), tipped to be released during the “holiday season” next year.

The console reportedly contains better graphics and a resolution better than most high-definition TV sets, with users able to play 3D games in full HD.

While the PlayStation 3 (PS3) was technically capable of full HD 3D game play, Sony’s guidelines prevented games from displaying in full 1080p (pixels).

As for the name, associate editor of gaming website Kotaku, Luke Plunkett, had a few ideas: “The word ‘Orbis’ itself, from Latin, means circle, or ring, or even orbit,” Plunkett wrote.

Sony to issue Ice Cream Sandwich to 2011 Xperia line soonThe handset maker outlines details for Android 4.0 updates for its growing Xperia roster.

Sony today announced that it plans to begin issuing Android 4.0 updates to its 2011 Xperia smartphones beginning in mid-April.

The first models expected to see Ice Cream Sandwich will be the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V, and Xperia Ray. These updates should take around four to six weeks to complete and will depend on the various markets and carriers.

The company is also setting itself up to take on Microsoft and Sonyon their home turf of console games.

From Electronic Arts to “Crysis” developers Crytek, industry executives are figuring out ways to migrate graphics-intensive so-called hardcore games to the iPad. Epic Games and Namco Bandai took the stage at Apple’s iPad unveiling this week to show off what they can do with an iPad that has a faster quad core processor.

Sony prices dual-screen tablet for AT&TWhile Apple is doubling the screen resolution of its tablet, Sony is literally doubling the screens on theirs, which finally received a price and release date for U.S. customers.

Starting March 4th, AT&T customers can pick up Sony’s dual-screen Tablet P for $399 with a two year contract. As a 4G device, customers will have a choice of two monthly plans to choose from, starting at $35/mo for 3GB of data, up to $50/mo for 5GB.

If contracts freak you out, you can purchase a Tablet P off-contract for $549 and avail yourself to AT&T’s pre-paid data plans.

HTC Launches New HTC One Line Of SmartphonesHTC has launched a new flagship Android smartphone, the HTC One X, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The majority of mobile giants had their announcements before the actual start of the MWC — including Samsung, LG and Sony.

HTC had the last, and perhaps the most glamorous event of the day, held in a huge rounded dome at the top of the Cúpula las Arenas next to Fira de Barcelona, where the main conference is held.
