T-Mobile launches campaign to lure iPhone users

Posted on September 11, 2012 by Source: foxnews.com

T-Mobile USA, the only “Big 4″ phone company that doesn’t sell the iPhone, now wants to snag used ones from AT&T.
Starting Wednesday, when Apple is expected to reveal a new iPhone model, T-Mobile will start advertising that AT&T iPhone owners who are out of contract can switch to T-Mobile.

T-Mobile launches campaign to lure iPhone users
“We expect that consumers will start trading in older devices,” said Harry Thomas, T-Mobile’s director of marketing. “For every person waiting in line for the next model, a lot of them have to find a secondary market for that older device.”

Apple hasn’t said anything about a new iPhone, but it is expected to announce the iPhone 5 at an event it has scheduled in San Francisco on Wednesday. Sales would likely start later this month.

Signing an iPhone up for T-Mobile service has been possible for years, and the company says it has more than a million iPhones on its network. But they suffer a big penalty in data speeds, taking about 50 times longer to download files than on AT&T’s network.

Vodafone hires former T-Mobile USA CEO

Posted on June 29, 2012 by Source: Cnn.com

Vodafone hires former T-Mobile USA CEONow we know why T-Mobile USA’s CEO, Philipp Humm, resigned Wednesday: He’s heading to European wireless competitor Vodafone.

Humm, who helmed T-Mobile USA for two years, will now be Vodafone’s chief executive of the northern and central Europe region.

That’s one of two new operating regions for Vodafone, which also named Paolo Bertoluzzo to head up the southern Europe region. Michel Combes held the CEO title for all of Europe operations until he left last month to join Vivendi.

Humm’s new job announcement comes just one day after his exit from T-Mobile, the fourth-largest wireless carrier in the U.S.

T-Mobile said Wednesday that Humm would be pursuing a career outside of parent company Deutsche Telekom, and that he would rejoin his family in Europe. News reports Wednesday said Humm was planning to join a Telekom competitor.

Jim Alling, the COO of T-Mobile USA, will serve as interim CEO.

Humm’s resignation was unexpected, but the two years he spent at the helm were a rough stretch for T-Mobile.

AT&T (T, Fortune 500) offered $39 billion for T-Mobile last year, but withdrew its bid in December after the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice moved to block the deal.

T-Mobile scored $3 billion as a breakup fee from AT&T, plus another $1 billion worth of spectrum.

But the company still faces an uphill battle, as it doesn’t have enough spectrum to deploy a competitive 4G network.

So T-Mobile is expected to merge with another company, if it can finagle a deal that will receive regulatory approval.

Apple will soon offer wireless service, expert believes Apple’s next huge move isn’t into the television or banking industries according to one expert. Instead, Apple will take on carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless by becoming a direct mobile service provider.

Veteran wireless industry strategist Whitey Bluestein, who has managed strategic deals for the likes of AT&T, Intel, T-Mobile, Verizon, Microsoft, Nokia and Best Buy, says Apple will soon begin to offer wireless service directly to iPhone and iPad users.

Are you a nomophobiac -- afraid of losing your mobile phone? There’s help!Kelly Reeves was getting ready for a trip when her phone slipped into a sink full of water. Panic moment! She quickly picked up the wet device and tried to turn it on, but nothing worked. Her first reaction? She got dressed, drove to the nearest store, and bought a new model at full retail price.

Reeves, who runs KLR Communications, a media relations company, says she can’t afford to be without a phone. “I even carry it when I walk from my office to the kitchen,” she told FoxNews.com. Business contacts are too important to miss, and staying on schedule means having a phone at the ready at all times.

iPhone 5 on T-Mobile? It could technically happen

Posted on January 11, 2012 by Source: news.cnet.com

iPhone 5 on T-Mobile? It could technically happenLAS VEGAS–The technical hurdle preventing the iPhone from coming to T-Mobile USA could be cleared when the next iteration of the phone comes out.

That’s the opinion of Neville Ray, chief technology officer of T-Mobile, who said he believes the iPhone never made it to T-Mobile because of the unique band of spectrum, known as AWS, that it uses for its wireless network.

T-Mobile has been left out in the cold as the other national carriers–and regional carrier C-Spire–have begun selling Apple’s hit device. CEO Philipp Humm, speaking at a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show today, admitted the lack of the iPhone has hurt its ability to retain subscribers, particularly high-value-contract ones known as postpaid.

Unlocked iPhone 4S now working in some T-Mobile network pockets

Posted on December 20, 2011 by Source: news.cnet.com

Unlocked iPhone 4S now working in some T-Mobile network pocketsAccording to a support thread on T-Mobile’s troubleshooting site, an unlocked iPhone 4S could be used on T-Mobile’s network, utilizing the iPhone 4S UMTS 1 band.

This theory has been backed up by a report on an unofficial T-Mobile blog, claiming that an unlocked iPhone 4S, in certain parts of the country, can run on T-Mobile’s 3G network.

iPhones have been a part of T-Mobile’s landscape since the beginning. In fact, T-Mobile offers a quite nice support community for iPhone users, despite not officially offering the product.

Now, as TmoNews reports, T-Mobile has begun reframing some of its spectrum in certain parts of the country. In areas of Nevada, Northern California, and the Pacific Northwest, T-Mobile has begun using the 1,900MHz band (the same one that an iPhone would use) for HSPA+.

T-Mobile’s normal spectrum is 1,700/2,100, which is not supported on the iPhone 4S.

How it all breaks down is this: T-Mobile is working on rolling out a reframed spectrum for PCS HSPA+ that could support Apple’s iPhone. Currently, iPhone users who have unlocked their phones for use on T-Mobile’s networks can only get 2G access. In the aforementioned parts of the country, users who have an unlocked iPhone 4S are finding that 3G is working (with download speeds in the 3G range to prove it).

Of course, this could be taken to mean that T-Mobile is trying to prep its network to add the iPhone, which I am sure the company would love to do, given its support of it over the years. But, this is still in its infancy and not a nationwide thing.

Still, it gives hope to T-Mobile users who have been holding out despite the allure of using their iPhone on AT&T’s superfast data network or Verizon’s far-reaching talk area.

Are you a T-Mobile user waiting for an official T-Mobile iPhone? Let me know in the comments!
